Investigator
Job Description:
The Investigator conducts investigations of criminal acts and/or violations of University policy. Often oversees the most complex investigations. Collaborates with Public Safety leadership on crime prevention activities and relevant trainings.

Essential Functions:
- Conducts investigations of complaints and reports of criminal acts and/or violations of University policy.
- Locates and questions complainants, victims, witnesses, suspects and other knowledgeable parties to gather and analyze facts and to develop information. Verifies the accuracy and authenticity of all information obtained.
- Identifies and collects relevant information and evidence, and coordinates with local law enforcement when necessary and appropriate.
- Prepares investigative reports and cases for University conduct proceedings and/or court action as appropriate.
- Serves as liaison with outside agencies on investigative matters of mutual interest. Provides support and cooperation for investigations occurring on campus.
- Keeps informed of criminal/violation trends on campus and in surrounding areas.
- Work closely with Director, Associate Director, Day-Shift Lieutenant on crime prevention and public safety-related programs.
- Provides uniformed patrol officer assistance/support on assigned shifts as necessary and available.
- Additional related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Primarily a 12-hour day shift rotation, 8 am-8 pm. Position requires ability to work all shifts, holidays and overtime as necessary for investigative purposes and/or as assigned to cover special events and details. Also available to return to campus when necessary to perform time sensitive investigations.
Minimum Qualifications: Position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent with an Associate's degree in criminal justice or related field preferred. Must have valid certification through VA DCJS as a Campus Security Officer, or be able to obtain certification within 180 days of hire. Must be able to be recertified as required and maintain valid certification at all times during term of employment. Prior law enforcement or security experience and/or investigative experience are preferred. The successful candidate will possess a high degree of reliability, ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality, and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good organization skills and ability to pay close attention to detail is necessary. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. The successful candidate will also possess the ability to relate well to students, faculty and a diverse community. Must hold a valid Virginia driver's license and a good driving history. Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
Physical Requirements:
- Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. '
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
- Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
Working Conditions: Primarily assigned to a Day Shift Rotation (8am-8pm). Position requires ability to work all shifts, holidays and overtime as necessary for investigative purposes and/or as assigned to cover special events and details. Also available to return to campus when necessary to perform time sensitive investigations. On occasion, some travel (including overnight) may be required for off-campus trainings/conferences.
Types of Work: Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Pay:
$18.54 - Pay Commensurate with Experience
