Job Description

NATURAL RESOURCE SPECIALIST, WILDLIFE WORKER position, Virginia Tech, available immediately to assist with research on red-cockaded woodpeckers on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Must be in good physical condition, able to climb to 60’ and operate power drills and 4-wheel drive vehicles. Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, fisheries and wildlife biology or related field required. Experience working with red-cockaded woodpeckers, reading color bands, constructing artificial cavities, identifying birds by sight and sound and banding birds preferred. Experience working on a military base desirable. Position involves working in strenuous field conditions, coordinating with military personnel and working around active military training. Salary dependent on qualifications, full benefits. This is a long term, year round position.

Required Qualifications

Ability to walk up to 6 miles per day and to climb up to 60 feet using Swedish ladders; ability to navigate through undeveloped forested habitat using GPS and maps; ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles; ability to interpret instructions and complete assignments independently or as part of a team; ability to operate power drills in order to construct artificial cavities for red-cockaded woodpeckers.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife biology or related field; experience working with red-cockaded woodpeckers; experience banding birds and reading color bands; experience identifying birds by sight and sound; experience constructing artificial cavities for red-cockaded woodpeckers; experience working on a military base.
