Trades Mechanic - Minor Mods
Job Description
Reporting to the Minor Modifications Manager, the Trades Mechanic is responsible for
performing tasks in the building trades (carpentry, masonry and painting) in support of renovation projects on the VT campus.
This position is designated as “Emergency Personnel”. May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
Required Qualifications
Verifiable journey-level experience in either carpentry, paint, or masonry trade with experience in all three.
Working knowledge of a variety of technical documents such as blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, schematics, specification records, and operating and maintenance manuals.
Record keeping experience such as processing work orders and/or tracking inventory.
Must have a valid drivers license.
Candidate should be able to perform routine institutional painting tasks.
Ability to recognize and understand industry terminologies of multiple trades.
Ability to use a computer, keep accurate and complete records.
Ability to perform work with minimal margin of error and work independently with little or no supervision.
Ability to communicate effectively, work as an effective team member, and have the ability to receive and execute instructions from the immediate supervisor and/or lead worker.
Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; and work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
This position is designated as "Emergency Personnel."
May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a large commercial or educational setting.
Experience in painting and glazing.
Experience in a computerized work order/inventory management system.
Completion of an Apprenticeship Program.

Salary Information
$30,500-$40,000

Additional Information
Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
Repetitive motion through use of tools, equipment and/or keyboarding.
Must have an acceptable and safe driving record.
Must have a driver's license check.
Normal work schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00 am-2:30 pm.
May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
Must wear employer provided uniforms as instructed by supervisor.
As situation dictates must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Occasional use/wearing of a respirator may be required.
Must have annual health and safety medical check.
This position meets the criteria for issuance of a mobile communication device (such as radio, cellphone, Ipad, Ipod, pager, etc.). Devices issued are the responsibility of the employee and are to be returned in satisfactory condition upon separation of employment. Devices are to be used according to supervisor instruction and according to relevant policies.
The successful Candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
