Tenure Track Faculty Position - Water Resources Engineering
Job Description
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of urban water resources and hydrologic sciences effective August 2020. As global urban populations continue to increase there is a need to improve our understanding of urban water cycles with the goal to enhance the sustainability and resilience of urban systems. The position is anticipated to be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, but exceptional candidates will be given consideration at the Full Professor rank.
The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Program and should enthusiastically pursue collaborative and transdisciplinary research opportunities. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarly work, sponsored research, undergraduate instruction, and specialized graduate education. The Department is home to 55 tenure-track faculty members, including several early career awardees, holders of endowed professorships, and National Academy members, as well as approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 625 undergraduate students. The Via Endowment allows the CEE department to offer a significant amount of scholarships and fellowships to qualified students.
Outstanding candidates with a strong background in urban water resources engineering and hydroscience are encouraged to apply. Focus areas of this search include urban hydrology, stormwater management, land development, green infrastructure, hydroinformatics, and the impacts of climate-induced changes to water supply and water quality on the urban environment. The successful applicant will be encouraged to pursue opportunities focused on water resources components of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary 21st-century global challenges, such as the development of smart cities and urban and coastal resilience in the face of growing natural hazards. Candidates should also consider how they could contribute to the growth and mission of the CEE Department’s Land Development Design Initiative (lddi.cee.vt.edu).
Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. Evidence of scholarship, research, and a record of external funding is required for consideration of appointment at the Associate or Full Professor levels.
Preferred Qualifications
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
