Sewing Specialist
Job Description
Alters and fabricates uniforms for the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and Marching Virginians so that each member has individually tailored uniforms. Also, provides quality repair work and alterations to university and local community. Responsibilities include using an industrial sewing machine to make proactive or requested alterations to uniform garments, including taking in / letting out, hemming trousers / skirts, hand stitching of chevrons and stripes, and other necessary repairs such as mending, and button or zipper replacing as needed. Complex work may consist of completely disassembling the garment, making alterations and reassembling the altered garment according to specifications.
Required Qualifications
Previous sewing or tailoring experience including alterations. Previous sewing experience using industrial and/or consumer type sewing machines. Demonstrated knowledge of and skill with hand sewing. Ability to follow tailor's marks and instructions. Strong interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain successful and effective relationships with a diverse, multicultural student and staff population.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous military sewing / alterations experience. Previous stockroom experience, including inventory duties.
