The Director functions in a leadership role promoting clinical and service excellence to residents, students, physicians, nursing, Carilion staff, the community, business and professional organizations, and the Carilion Clinic at large. The Director leads collaborative processes in developing clinical educational and service measures, setting performance targets, gauging periodic progress toward those targets, and the overall evaluation of the learners’ performance. The Director actively develops and manages an appropriate balance between clinical, service, and financial performance. In keeping with the goals set forth by the Board of Directors and consistent with the goals of Carilion Clinic, the Director plans and develops a progressive, innovative vision.
Job Responsibilities:
With the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Carilion Clinic Department Chairs, Residency and Clerkship program directors, Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety administrative leadership and other constituent groups involved in clinical education, establishes the program mission, vison objectives, and measures of effectiveness; guides strategic planning and initiatives for the ongoing growth and development of the program.
Works closely with CSRPS Director to ensure annual operating and capital budgets are consistent with strategic and operational plans set forth by Carilion Clinic.
Establishes and maintains effective, cooperative working relationships with clinical and operational leaders and support teams throughout CMC. Actively supports a culture of continuous performance improvement through collaborative evaluation, planning, design, monitoring, and reporting efforts. Collaborates with educational leaders within Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine as well as Radford University Carilion.
Serves as an educational resource to faculty, staff and/or other Center users regarding the appropriateness of content and level of difficulty given the educational goals of each simulation activity, and regarding the development of specific educational programs consistent with those educational goals.
Actively participates in the local, state, national and international professional organizations within simulation-based education to remail current with best practices.
Serves as a lead to enhance patient safety and systems integration by promoting and the use of simulation-based education.
Works collaboratively with Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety Program Director and staff on the following specific items:
a) Assist with a broad-based program involving budget development, staff recruitment and supervision and the conduct of educational programs
b) Develop case scenarios and provide various types of medical simulation experiences for resident physicians, medical students and/or other health professions students
c) Provides guidance for medical simulation experiences to enhance and augment ACLS, ATLS, PALS and other courses for faculty, residents, students, and staff
d) Conduct programs to train faculty, residents and staff members of Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety on the use of simulation, debriefing and innovations in clinical education as well as assessment protocols
e) Conduct educational research in medical simulation
f) Work with clinical simulation faculty within VTCSOM to help them meet their training needs for the medical students
g) Develop and offer CME programs to area medical staff as requested
h) Obtain a high-profile role program in national organizations for medical simulation, with an eye toward eventual accreditation of the program and reaccreditation as needed
i) Develop outside professional relationships to help develop training programs for regional medical personnel (EMS), long term care facilities, academic institutions and other external entities as needed.
j) Work with CSRPS Director to manage resource allocation to best address simulation needs for CMC, Carilion Clinic, VTCSOM, Radford University Carilion and outside institutional requests
k) Work with CSRPS Director to oversee the operation of the Simbulance with use for Carilion Transport, CMC, and community outreach, resource allocation, and public relations.
l) Assists with the development of simulation curriculum based on ACGME guidelines for residency programs as needed
m) Responsible for ensuring best practices in the development and delivery of simulation based educational activities
n) Develop along with Center for Simulation, Research and Patient Safety short- and long-term plans for program expansion and resource acquisition to ensure best practices in the use of simulation resources
Serves as a mentor and provides guidance in professional growth and development to physicians and staff members involved in CSRPS activities, with building relationships with residency program faculty, department chairs, attending physicians as well as senior leadership.
Serve on appropriate subcommittees of the Carilion Clinic, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Radford University Carilion to ensure that specific and relevant training requirements and educational objectives are met.
Assist in the creation of faculty development opportunities to expand faculty capabilities in simulation, standardized patients, virtual simulation, task trainers case-based learning and/or other areas of technology applied to education.

Physical Demands
Incumbent is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Close and distance vision is commonly required. Employee may be required to travel occasionally in a work capacity, including overnight travel.
Work Environment
The work surroundings are like those typically associated with a simulation center environment. The noise level is usually moderate, and the exposure to extreme temperature changes is minimal. There is no known exposure to hazardous fumes or emissions.
