Research Specialist
Job Description
Contribute to the scientific mission of the Biochemistry department by conducting research of a biochemical and molecular genetic nature on the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The Research Specialist will work under the direct supervision of a Biochemistry department faculty member with training provided as needed. Research activities will include maintaining cultures of the malaria parasite, generating genetically-modified parasite lines, determining the anti-malarial efficacy of novel small molecules, and contributing to biochemical studies of parasite lipid metabolism and drug mode of action. Once trained, the Research Specialist will be expected to work independently and to maintain detailed and accurate records. They will assist with training personnel and with routine laboratory maintenance.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities involve contributing to the research program of a Biochemistry department faculty member and include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Research Activities:
- routine maintenance of malaria parasite cultures
- generation of genetically modified parasite lines
- plan biochemical experiments in consultation with the supervisor
- independently execute experiments related to studies of parasite metabolism and drug mode of action
- analyze data and present experimental results in lab group meetings
• Maintaining Accurate Records of Laboratory Activities
• Assisting with Laboratory Management
• Training Personnel
Required Qualifications
• Competence in basic laboratory skills and safety • Experience with microbiological and/or cell culture techniques • Working knowledge of computers and competence with basic computer software including Microsoft Word and Excel • Effective verbal and written English communication skills |
Preferred Qualifications
• B.S. degree in biology, biochemistry or related field
• Experience working at Biological Safety Level 2 containment
• Experience with recombinant DNA techniques and plasmid construction
• Demonstrated ability to maintain careful and organized records
• Demonstrated ability to work productively in a collaborative environment
