Research Coordinator
Job Description
The SACS Research Coordinator will provide technical and administrative assistance to all faculty within the department, in regards to research protocols. Provide primary patient care activities including acquisition and documentation of physical findings, procurement of laboratory specimens (blood, urine, feces, etc), anesthesiology and special diagnostic procedures. Identifies potential prospective research candidates/patients, communicates and obtains authorizations/permissions, schedules and participates in follow-up examinations and re-evaluations of clients/patients enrolled in studies. These duties will be balanced between the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, research shared lab in Blacksburg and Animal Cancer Care and Research Center in Roanoke. Working closely with the Clinical Trials Coordinator, this position will liaise with owners and referring practitioners to explain study enrollment criteria. Answers phone and email inquiries from owners and referring veterinarians. Performs data entry and keeps research databases/medical records current. Responsible for animal purchase requests and receiving, research supplies ordering and receiving, project set up, IACUC drafting, inventory of research samples and equipment assigned to the department. She/he will be the bookkeeper for research projects and will reconcile and perform the aging report for research funds. Organize research orientation for all new faculty and provide information needed for research purposes depending on type of appointment. She/he will work collectively with the Clinical Trial coordinator and the administrative assistants to guarantee the faculty within the department have all project needs met. A small percent of the position will provide other academic support for faculty and the department.
Required Qualifications
Licensed as a Veterinary Technician; ability to understand verbal and written instructions, good written and oral human relations and communication skills; Knowledge of basic nursing skills as well as knowledge of anesthetic equipment and monitoring. Proficient with venipuncture, placing intravenous catheters, performing endotracheal intubation, inducing and monitoring anesthesia.
Basic knowledge of accounting. Computer skills such as experience using word processing software, spreadsheets, email and internet; excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team environment, and ability to maintain confidentiality; must be detail oriented and have excellent organizational and time management skills, personal initiative, flexibility, and have a proactive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working in research, an academic or higher education setting. Experience with RedCap or similar databases and automated systems such as HokieMart.
