Research Assistant/Lab Manager
Job Description
A full-time research assistant (lab manager) is sought for the lab of Dr. Carla Finkielstein at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion (http://research.vtc.vt.edu). This role will independently support research projects and oversee all research activities within this unit and assist its director with the operational oversight of her laboratory. This position is a professional research position that is expected to function with relative independence and responsibility and reports directly to the director Dr. Finkielstein. The ICRL laboratory aims at understanding the fundamental principles by which disruption of circadian rhythms impact cell division and promotes cancer initiation and progression. In addition, ICRL focus in time-of-day medicine and its application for cancer treatment by fostering inter- and cross-disciplinary collaborations with colleagues in the Blacksburg campus and the School of Medicine. Our laboratory employs different model systems including mice and zebra fish. The range of methodologies include cell and molecular biology and confocal microscopy. A successful candidate should have proven experience in those areas and in working with tissue culture cells. Use of standard lab instrumentation, e.g. centrifuges and PCRs, are expected. The candidate would also be in charge of placing orders and maintaining the lab organized and in compliance with all regulations. Although the candidate will be involved in supporting many aspects of experimentation daily, he/she in addition is expected to be the “go-to-person” for all trainees in the director's laboratory. Specifically, the incumbent will be responsible for assurance of regulatory compliance of all undergraduate trainees from VT participating in research at the ICRL, including Biosafety, blood born pathogen and IACUC/IBC training.
Required Qualifications
Significant research experience
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability and desire to succeed in a fast-paced research environment with multiple concurrent duties
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
BA/BS in bioscience, neuroscience, biology, or related field with substantial relevant experience will be considered.
