Public Safety Systems Analyst
Job Description
Reporting within the Division of Operations Information Technology and Data Administration, this position provides the planning and support for all information systems within the Virginia Tech Police Department (VTPD), the Virginia Tech Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad (VTRS). This includes performing computer support for desktops, laptops, servers, mobile data terminals, and patrol car video systems. In addition, this position assists with information security relating to these systems. This requires monitoring emerging network and IT technology threats, responding, and taking preventive actions. This position will provide recommendations to the IT Engagement Manager regarding the purchase of computer systems, related software, and peripherals for supported units. This position routinely monitors practices to ensure that user access, system access, resources and information are secure. This position is responsible for ensuring the ability to meet all relevant CALEA Accreditation standards and ensuring full compliance with Department of Justice Criminal Justice Information Systems guidelines. Due to the critical nature of this position and its support of a 24 X 7 unit, after hours and on-call work may be required.
Required Qualifications
• Master's degree in information assurance, computer science, information technology, or related field; or Bachelor's degree with significant training and/or experience.
• Experience with installing and administering Windows Server and client operating systems in a Microsoft Active Directory based environment.
• Knowledge of data encryption software (TrueCrypt. Microsoft BitLocker, etc.) and techniques.
• Experience with installing and configuring security software or hardware applications such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, network mapping tools, and vulnerability scanners.
• Experience providing technical support to a wide variety of devices (desktops, laptops, printers, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in law enforcement and/or emergency management environments.
• Understanding and experience working with Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) accessing law enforcement sensitive information.
• Experience with information systems accessing the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN).
• Knowledge of authentication protocols and other methods of providing security for passwords and network communication.
• Experience in limiting host access through local firewalls.
• Understanding of key applicable federal, state, and local legislation such as FERPA, GLB, and HIPPA.
• Experience in providing security guidance and training to both technical personnel and end-users.
Salary Information
$50,000 to $55,000
