Propulsion and Power Laboratory Manager
Job Description
A Propulsion and Power Laboratory Manager is sought. Highly competitive candidates should have demonstrated the capability to manage key technical and administrative activities in support of an active research/research and development laboratory. The Advanced Propulsion and Power Laboratory (APPL, http://aoe.vt.edu/appl) is a $4M state-of-the-art laboratory that opened in 2015. A wide array of projects serving government and industry sponsors are hosted in the 8000 sq. ft. laboratory and are supported by extensive facility capabilities, such as a professionally staffed machine shop, high volume compressed air resources, and cooling water supply. Safety is the highest priority, and the successful candidate will serve the most important role in the laboratory as a safety advisor and monitor to all users, including graduate and undergraduate students. As a dynamic research laboratory, frequent interaction with student users, faculty, machine shop staff, and building property managers is necessary to promote safe use and for coordinating tasks such as contracting work for modifying compressed air plumbing or electrical changes. As a laboratory that is used by a number of faculty members, the successful candidate will be in charge of daily administration for facility usage logging and bi-weekly reports to the faculty operations committee.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant technical and/or administrative area (e.g., mechanic, machinist, electrician, welding, building or facility management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) and/or equivalent experience
- At least 5 years of experience in a relevant technical environment
- Familiarity with mechanical systems such as air compressors, cooling water towers, and compressed air pluming
- Spreadsheet software skills for tracking facility use and generating usage reports
- Evidence of organizational skills for keeping facility records
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience in a role involving administrative duties in a technical environment
