Job Description

The Program and Fiscal Support Coordinator performs a hybrid of duties involving research program support, fund management, and departmental fiscal support. This position serves as the primary support person for research programs within the department; editing highly technical and complex documents, point person for program-related policies and procedures, compliance monitoring, and reporting. The individual will also be responsible for program-related fiscal functions including but not limited to post-award and financial monitoring, award setup and closeout,reviewing transaction and project level spending, ensuring effort reporting accuracy on sponsored projects, and the development and maintenance of project-specific spending models.


The incumbent will also serve as a member of the fiscal team, providing direct or back-up support for procurement activities, records retention, monthly reconciliations, labor redistributions, fixed assets, as well as other assigned fiscal and departmental activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated familiarity with federal and nonfederal awards and/or regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with current office computer software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google Suite.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage large volumes of work while anticipating needs to meet deadlines; ability to use independent judgment and decision making; ability to work autonomously but within a team environment, and a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, management or other business related field, or equivalent training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic research environment.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of sponsored program administration and compliance and higher education business practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with Banner, MicroStrategy, ChromeRiver, Hokie Mart, and other University systems.
  • Experience with and knowledge of Virginia Tech purchasing, travel, fiscal, and other University policies and procedures.
