Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Research Associate in Experimental Nuclear Physics
Job Description
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral associate or senior research associate position in experimental nuclear physics in the group of Prof. Mark Pitt at Virginia Tech. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to make important contributions to the development of the MOLLER project at Jefferson Laboratory. The MOLLER experiment is a parity-violating electron scattering experiment in preparation for Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory. Its goal is to search for physics beyond the Standard Model at the TeV scale. The work will involve simulation, design, construction, and testing of hardware for the experiment and planning for the execution of the experiment. Duties may also include supervising and coordinating the work of other researchers and personnel, especially graduate and undergraduate students.
The position is for one year initially, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. The position will preferably be based at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, but being based at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA can also be considered. Based on the credentials of the successful candidate, the offer rank may be at either postdoctoral associate or senior research associate.
Required Qualifications
Postdoctoral associate applicants must have a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics or a closely related field by the appointment start date. Ph.D. must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining.
Senior research associate applicants must have a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear or particle physics or a closely related field and prior postdoctoral experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in any of the following areas is an advantage: software and hardware development in accelerator-based experiments, C++, GEANT4 and related CERN library tools.
