Job Description
The Controlled Environment Agriculture Innovation Center (Center) is a cooperative research and education initiative between the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES) at Virginia Tech and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) located in Danville, Virginia. The mission of the Center is to develop new crops, production practices and technologies to advance the field of controlled environment agriculture and improve its effectiveness, productivity and economic and environmental sustainability.
The work location for this position is primarily based in Danville, Virginia. The incumbent will conduct research related to the production of plant crops in controlled environments such as vertical farms and greenhouses. Research may focus on crop production, systems design and improvement, energy management and/or sensor development and usage. The incumbent will design and manage research projects located in vertical grow facilities and greenhouses in cooperation with colleagues in SPES and (IALR). The incumbent will analyze collected data and write reports and manuscripts for publication and may also also assist with the writing and submission of grants and assist other team members with research projects.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in plant science, horticulture, biosystems engineering or a closely aligned field. Experience conducting research in controlled environments such as growth chambers, vertical farms or greenhouses.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in plant crop production in controlled environments such as vertical farms and greenhouses. Demonstrated experience with writing manuscripts, reports or grants.
