Postal Assistant
Job Description
The Postal Assistant processes and distributes student and department mail and packages to specified locations on campus. Open and close residential mail room, package area, and Virginia Tech Post Office. Meet schedules for the collection and return of mail. Sort mail for delivery and arrange it in delivery sequence. Answer customers' questions about university mail services and regulations.
Required Qualifications
• Previous experience communicating with or working with the public.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Must have the ability to: maintain accurate records, paper and digital, be willing to work in close proximity to others, work as a team member, comprehend and follow instructions, adhere to a schedule, and operate a vehicle in a safe manner.
• Must be able to: safely move and handle up to 70 lbs.; sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb stairs and perform repetitive movements of reaching, lifting, sorting and carrying mail, packages and boxes for long periods of time; and work in a variety of weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in or with any of the following highly desirable: Record keeping; Pitney Bowes Arrival Package System; use of meter machines; use of a personal computer and computerized mail management systems; sorting, correcting and forwarding mail; experience as a delivery driver.
• Previous experience as a delivery driver.
• Experience driving large delivery vans

Additional Information
• Position requires 5 or more hours per day of walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing stairs with repetitive movements of reaching, lifting, sorting and carrying mail, packages and boxes.
• Must be able to safely move and handle up to 70 lbs.
• Considerable amount of time driving to various mail stops is required.
• Environmental demands: Must work both indoors and outdoors with in all weather temperatures generally ranging from 0 to 100 degrees, conditions and temperature extremes. When working outdoors, there is no protection from weather.
• Must walk on uneven ground that includes gravel, rocks, sidewalks, steps, tile and concrete.
• Must have a criminal background check.
• Must have a driver's license check.
• Monday - Friday, 40 hrs/week Varies 7 am - 5 pm. Work schedules may vary as needed to address the needs of the Department and the University.
• This is an emergency personnel position.
• Employee must report to work when university has an authorized closing to process USPS mail and packages for Residential Students.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Obtain a Customer Service Certificate
The successful Candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check
