Job Description
Police Lieutenants at Virginia Tech protect and serve a diverse University community. Lieutenants are responsible for exercising supervisory responsibility of police officers and other staff assigned including addressing personnel issues under department guidelines and applying sound leadership skills; various administrative and investigative duties to include developing policies and conducting special investigations, including internal affairs. In conjunction with the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police, provide management responsibility for the University Threat Assessment Team and the Campus and Workplace Violence Prevention Committee while serving as the primary Threat Assessment Case investigator. Lieutenants manage and ensure efficient operation of the Investigations Unit including investigating motor vehicle accidents, personal injuries, criminal matters; enforcement of state and federal laws, and University policies; preparation of reports; courtroom testimony; traffic direction and crowd control; response to emergencies; extended foot patrol, evidence, and other duties as needed. Lieutenants may be required to work a rotating shift that includes weekends, nights, and holidays; reporting for duty in adverse weather conditions; frequent public contact; adhering to all criteria established for a Nationally Accredited Police Department.
Required Qualifications
- Must possess DCJS law enforcement certification.
- Experience interpreting and enforcing state laws.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of police procedures, principles, and techniques.
- Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience.
- Knowledge of performance management.
- Knowledge of police software and information systems.
- Experience with police report writing.
- Experience in professional development, training, and personnel matters.
- Experience with security systems.
- Demonstrated computer experience.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse department and the university community.
- Ability to give credible court testimony and comprehend legal documents.
- Ability to use independent judgment and exercise considerable restraint under stressful situations
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activities such as running, lifting, jumping, bicycling, climbing
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle at high speeds in adverse conditions.

Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in criminal justice, police science or related field.
- Previous military experience.
- Previous experience as a detective/investigator.
- Possesses extensive knowledge and experience of threat assessment case management.
- Previous experience with strategic planning.
- Knowledge of national accreditation standards.
- Familiar with community policing programs.
- Previous experience with campus law enforcement operations.
- Previous experience writing and submitting grants.
- Familiar with budget/fiscal planning and directing.

This position is designated safety sensitive. Candidates for employment are required to have a criminal history check, including fingerprinting and a pre-employment drug screen. Incumbents are subject to random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol screening.
Must undergo an extensive background check and credit history check, with satisfactory results.
Must be U.S. citizen as required by Virginia Code Section 15.2-1705.
Must qualify under federal and state guidelines to carry a firearm. Federal law prohibits a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
Must pass physical abilities test by running 1.5 miles within 20 minutes.
Must be a high school graduate or able to furnish documentary evidence of equivalency degree.
Must be at least 21 years of age on date of hire.
Must currently possess a valid Virginia Operator’s License, or be able to obtain it within 30 days of employment.
Must pass a psychological evaluation following a conditional offer.
Must pass a medical exam, to include vision testing, following a conditional offer.
Must meet vision requirements: corrected to 20/20 and may not exceed 20/50 or worse in one eye uncorrected and 20/100 or worse in the other eye uncorrected; color blindness including pronounced shade deficiencies will be disqualifying.
Must meet all other standards by law (15.2-1705: 9-169 Code of Virginia) and by policy of the Criminal Justice Services Board.
