Plumber/Steamfitter - ShopVirginia Tech
Reporting to the HVAC and Mechanical Systems Supervisor, the Plumber/Steamfitter will perform tasks in the Mechanical trades (Plumbing, Steamfitting, HVAC, and Maintenance Millwright) in support of building maintenance/equipment installations on the VT campus.
Must have or be able to obtain a Journeyman’s or Masters license in plumbing, steam fitting, HVAC, maintenance millwright, or all four trades within eleven months of hire date; OR current Journey or Master level licensing agreement (reciprocity) from another\jurisdiction as approved by the Virginia Board for Contractors.
Must obtain Virginia license within 6 months of employment.
Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs; ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, and pushing/pulling.
Ability to communicate effectively, have good team work skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
This is a designated emergency personnel position.
Experience in a commercial, construction, or educational settings.
Good working knowledge of plumbing/steamfitting/HVAC/mechanical equipment.
Commensurate with Experience
Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
This position is designated as “Emergency Personnel.”
Must be available twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week to provide support during planned events or emergency situations (such as inclement weather) to include being physically on site if deemed necessary.
Work hours are normally Monday - Friday 7:30a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
During periods of inclement weather, emergency situations or for special projects, may work a modified schedule and additional hours to meet the needs of the department.
As situation dictates, must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Must wear employer provided uniforms as instructed by supervisor or lead.
Use/wearing of a respirator will be required.
Must have annual health and safety medical check.
The successful Candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
