Job Description

The Controller’s Office is seeking a payroll analyst to assist with fundamental payroll operations to include the following: processing all regular and manual payrolls, ensuring accurate and timely payment; reviewing exception reports and analyzing manual payment requests; serving as one of the primary liaisons between Payroll and university departments for timekeeping and payroll related functions; assisting with the university’s labor redistribution process, providing back up support for the Virginia Employment Commission reporting and completing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Knowledge of payroll accounting concepts
• Proficient user of Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
• Strong analytical skills including the ability to analyze, interpret, and explain complicated financial transactions;
• Experience working under pressure with a high degree of accuracy;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to provide customer service courteously and work effectively with diverse groups of people
• Experience working without close supervision and handling diverse tasks while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive written and oral information.

Preferred Qualifications

• A.S. or B.S. in accounting, business administration or similar
• Experience interpreting and applying payroll concepts, regulations and systems (e.g., labor laws, employment classification, payments to nonresident aliens, leave payouts, benefit deductions, time and attendance software, automated payroll systems, etc.)
• Experience working in a higher education setting; Experience understanding and applying complex state or university policies and procedures.
• Experience conducting research, account analysis, and performing reconciliations
