Honors Faculty in Communication for Sociotechnical Systems
Job Description
The Calhoun Discovery Program (CDP) at the Virginia Tech Honors College (http://www.honorscollege.vt.edu ) in partnership with the Virginia Tech “Tech for Humanity” initiative (https://www.provost.vt.edu/destination_areas/tech-for-humanity.html ) and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS) (https://liberalarts.vt.edu ), is announcing an opening for a Collegiate Assistant Professor position in Communication for Sociotechnical Systems.
The position is focused on novel educational approaches that can facilitate the development of communication and collaboration skills for students within a sociotechnical systems context. The appointee will be expected to take a lead role in the following collaborative activities:
•development and delivery of multimodal communication modules for honors students from all disciplines participating in the CDP
•facilitation (in collaboration with CLAHS units and CLAHS colleagues) of curricular concentrations and/or majors within CLAHS that prepare students for careers in collaborative communication within complex sociotechnical contexts
•collaborative cross-university research in the role of unique humanistic skills (such as communication, diverse collaboration and decisions in complexity) in advancing inclusive and sustainable development for the 21st century
•collaborative research in adaptive and collaborative pedagogy with other CDP and VT colleagues as well as industry and non-profit partners
The appointee will mentor highly-motivated honors students, teach honors courses, lead collaborative, project-based learning and related undergraduate research on sociotechnical innovation, collaborate with the industry and non-profit partners of the program, and contribute to the overall development of the Calhoun Discovery Program and the Tech for Humanity Initiative. The appointee will be expected to participate in college- and university-level service, committee work, and other duties as assigned, and to pursue a program of personal research in areas related to the position description. The appointee in this position will hold an affiliate status with a related department in CLAHS.
This is a Collegiate Faculty position (non-tenure, long term renewable contracts with promotion path) at the rank of assistant professor.

Required Qualifications
●A PhD in an area related to digital humanities, or a Masters degree and significant professional experience in this space,
●A demonstrated record of interest in innovative, inclusive and adaptive pedagogy
●Experience in undergraduate teaching as well as experience in inter/transdisciplinary collaboration that spans academia and professional settings
●Demonstrated competence and experience with online publishing and multimedia authoring tools and technology workflows Proven ability to teach undergraduate courses in both thematic and methods topics.
●Demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduate students in developing interdisciplinary capacities
●Interest in working with industry on preparing a workforce for the 21st century
Preferred Qualifications
●Previous experience in interdisciplinary design teams with collaborators from fields such as technology, business, and social sciences and/or humanities.
●Previous experience in project based learning
●Research experience in inter- and transdisciplinary learning
●A desire to advise and teach a highly motivated student body drawn from a broad spectrum of disciplines and from diverse backgrounds
●An interest in the intersection of technology development and social responsibility
●A commitment to diversity in the university and work community
●Experience in industry collaborations
