Hazardous Materials Technician
Job Description
Reporting to the Hazardous Materials Manager, the Hazardous Materials Technician ensures and assists with the safe handling, transportation, and storage of all university hazardous (chemical and radioactive) material and waste according to established safety procedures and regulations. Assists in responding to hazardous material incidents.
Required Qualifications
- Working knowledge of chemical, biological, and/or radiological principles.
- Knowledge and/or experience applying federal and state OSHA and EPA regulations.
- Experience with laboratory safety.
- Knowledge of proper chemical handling/disposal procedures and emergency response techniques.
- Ability to provide emergency response assistance to university personnel.
- Ability to safely move and handle up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator.
- Valid driver's license - CDL with hazmat endorsement or ability to obtain CDL with hazmat endorsement within 12 months of employment.
- Working knowledge of computers and software.
- Ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, or related science.
- Experience with hazardous waste management and safety procedures.
- HAZWOPER certification.
- Hazardous waste management certification.
- NRRT certified.
- Training in hazardous material handling.
- Working knowledge of operational characteristics of radiological equipment.
- Experience in the operation of radiation detection and measurement equipment.
- Working knowledge of radiation standards and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment.
- Previous experience working in a team-based environment.
