Fisheries Technician
Job Description
To assist with propagation and culture of freshwater mussels at Virginia Tech’s Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Center, Blacksburg. Collect fish via electroshocking. Lead field crew to collect mussels and fishes from various rivers in Virginia and Tennessee. Operate and maintain field and lab equipment to monitor water quality. Assist with design and construction of recirculating aquaculture systems. Assist with administering projects and preparation of required reports. Assist with mussel propagation, including assisting with development and utilization of in vitro culture techniques to transform mussel larvae to the juvenile stage. Prepare algae for feeding mussels. Conduct routine plumbing to repair leaks.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must have the ability to collect and identify mussels and fish; experience with mussel propagation and culture essential; ability to assist with implementing experiments; ability to record and enter data; ability to work outdoors year-round; be able to lift more than 50 lbs. and carry equipment for extended periods of time; must have the ability to swim well; frequent overnight travel; periodic weekend work.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with aquaculture; experience with research experiments and statistics; experience with mussel culture and identification; experience working with minimal supervision in a lab setting; experience in stream sampling and data collection. Bachelor of Science in Fisheries or related field.
