Embedded Counselor - Northern Virginia
Job Description
The Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center invites applications for a licensed mental health clinician to provide services to students enrolled at the Virginia Tech campus in Northern Virginia. Located in Falls Church, the counselor will provide direct clinical and educational services to students while also providing consultation and collaboration with the faculty, advisors, and staff at the campus. The position will report to the director of the counseling center and collaborate with the student affairs and faculty in this location.
The clinician will provide clinical services primarily to graduate students including initial consultation and assessment, individual counseling, and make appropriate referrals for psychiatric consultations. The counselor will be available for drop-in hours, programmatic offerings to students, and informal consultations. At the campus, the counselor will be available for consultation with faculty, advisors, and staff regarding student mental health concerns.
This is a new position that will have the opportunity to assist in supporting students at our growing campus offerings in the Greater Washington DC Metro region. Over the next three-to-five years, Virginia Tech will expand its presence to include increased graduate enrollment to collaborate with external partners in the area.
Required Qualifications
• Applicants will be licensed in their mental health field which requires the appropriate degree for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia, e.g., doctoral degree for psychologists, master’s degree for counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work.
• Ability to work independently with strict adherence to ethical and legal guidelines
• Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions.
• Experience and interest in collaboration with academic departments, faculty and staff.
• Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in working with graduate students in engineering and the sciences
• Familiarity with community resources in Northern Virginia/DC region.
• Ability to speak a foreign language, e.g., Spanish, Mandarin.
• Experience in outreach and educational programming, e.g., suicide prevention gate-keeper programs.
