Job Description
The Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology at Virginia Tech is a University level research center that reports to the Vice President of Research and Innovation. Its mission is to cultivate the next generation of national security leaders by developing and executing curricular, extracurricular, and research opportunities to engage students. Renown academic and research faculty from DOD, IC and industry have converged with guidance from an illustrious Board of Advisors constituted by former Directors of NRO and NGA, S&T heads from CIA and NSA, NCTC, etc. One of the fastest growing research centers at VT, sponsors and collaborators benefit from both highly experienced student talent and senior technical leadership that address some of our nation’s greatest security challenges. The Hume team conducts research contracts for the IC, DoD, DHS and Industry. Execution of scope, schedule and cost is complimented by a team of project and program managers. Transition of high impact technology deliverables is effected directly by staff personnel, through industry partnerships and/or numerous individual startups. Opportunity for extramural consulting work also exists. Restricted research is conducted at state of art facilities in Arlington and a 45,000 sq foot building in beautiful Blacksburg.
Motivated applicants are sought to join as Computer Engineers to support rapid growth in our body of programs in resilient C4ISR Missions, Signals Intelligence & Cyber Operations and Autonomy and Orchestration. The successful applicant will have technical expertise in software engineering and general programming supporting cyber physical systems, with specific expertise in one or more of the following areas: software-oriented cybersecurity, object orientated programming, NoSQL databases, data structures, embedded systems, compiled and interpreted languages, graphical user interfaces and data visualization, and/or distributed computing. Practical hands-on experience with hybrid hardware/software systems is a plus.
While this position is a general software engineering staff member of the Center who will support software development for a variety of projects, initial project work will focus on integrating distributed artificial intelligence and machine learning on DoD platforms. There is a specific interest in individuals who understand software best practices, software configuration management, embedded systems, and advanced data structures in support of running autonomous command and control algorithms.
Specific responsibilities include the following: (1) support the execution of university sponsored programs by conducting software programming and integration; (2) maintain software best practices and configuration management for applied research programs; (3) support the quality testing and evaluation of software in meeting internal and external requirements; and (4) follow and support the generation of technical documentation concerning project specific Application Program Interfaces (API), Interface Control Documentation (ICD), and report generation related to number (3).
Required Qualifications
- Given the nature of the research conducted and the requirements from the federal sponsor, the candidate must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
- An earned Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related engineering discipline with relevant experience.
- Evidence of software engineering skills with software integration and advanced data structures, especially in C, C++, and Python.
- Experience with software best practices and configuration management, especially git.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in executing upon research projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest and/or experience in working effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.
- Active security clearance at the TS/SCI level.
- Experience working in an academic environment.
- Experience conducting research programs supporting the federal government.
