Comm and Outreach Manager
Job Description
Under the direction of the department, the Communications and Outreach Manager develops, executes, and evaluates a comprehensive communications program and strategies for the Mechanical Engineering department in support of its vision and strategic directions. This position is responsible for maintaining the department website, internal television monitors, and social media platforms. Maintenance includes updating and enhancing material routinely, overseeing the management, organization, and structure of the department's public content across all media and advancing the department's presence through a multimedia effort Supports development of electronic and print materials for on and off campus programs and new department initiatives, ensures compliance with university brand standards in all initiatives involving communications, marketing, and public activities , independently writes and edits content for VT News, for media release, for the quarterly digital Mechanical Engineering Magazine, and other related materials as necessary, works closely with the department's faculty to collect data and information for electronic and print materials, develops material for departmental programs including, but not limited to project activities on and off campus, manages the department's comprehensive communications, publications, and printing operations, assists in development of material for special programs, such as off campus instructional academic and research programs or partnerships, writes, designs, and edits department's Alumni related news and publications for electronic and print media, responsible for arranging or taking photos and/or video as needed. Works collaboratively with colleagues from University Relations to enhance the reputation of and build support for the department's programs, and provides supervision and leadership to a team of full and part-time staff members who may be assigned to work on communications and outreach tasks.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications or related field; a broad background in institutional communications; ability to develop and implement a strategic vision; evidence of strong writing, editing, interpersonal, presentation, and marketing skills; proficiency in using word processing, image processing, content management systems, and social networking tools in communications or marketing programs; understanding of effective graphic design, branding principles, and the use of internet and social media as a means of communication; ability to manage multiple projects and to exhibit initiative in a fastpaced environment; ability to work collaboratively with a team of colleagues in representing the department; strong interpersonal skills and ability to present and promote concepts to others and secure support of multiple stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in communications or related field; experience working in a higher education setting; certification as a Brand Ambassador for the university; experience work with volunteers.
