Collegiate Assistant Professor of Composition
Job Description
The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Rhetoric & Writing, who will teach in and who will contribute to the leadership of a growing, vibrant Composition Program, to begin August 2020. (See §5.1.5 of the Faculty Handbook at https://www.provost.vt.edu/who_we_are/faculty_affairs/faculty_handbook/chapter05.html for information on the rank of Collegiate Professor.) We seek a colleague with an open research specialization within rhetoric and composition/writing studies who is experienced with contemporary approaches to the teaching of writing, who is dedicated to active professional development, and who strives to create innovative environments for practice-based teaching and learning. Occasional travel to national conferences is required. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal background check.
The standard teaching load is 3/3. This position will also help shape professional development activities consistent with goals and methods of large-scale writing programs. An active research agenda and receptivity to assuming rotating responsibilities related to writing program administration are preferred. Virginia Tech’s Composition Program provides instruction in ENGL1105: First-year Writing: Introduction to College Composition and ENGL1106: First-year Writing: Writing from Research to more than 6,000 students each year.

Ideal candidates will have experience with the design of contemporary writing curricula, GTA education, multilingual writing instruction and support, assessment, writing program administration, and/or teaching first-year writing.
