Assoc Professor Criminology
Virginia Tech invites applications for one full-time, nine-month, tenured or tenure-track position in Criminology in the Department of Sociology at the Associate Professor level to start Fall, 2020 at our main campus in Blacksburg, VA. Applicants must have Ph.D. in Sociology or Criminology with a Ph.D. in Sociology preferred. Substantive areas of research within Criminology are open; however, we are preferably seeking a senior scholar who has a research agenda that focuses on corrections, broadly defined. In addition, we are ideally searching for a scholar who will maintain a program of research excellence, has success with extramural funding, and will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate programs. The scholar must also be able to teach undergraduate classes related to the causes and commission of crimes, especially crimes of violence and or juvenile delinquency. This position is intended to meet the increasing demand for our Criminology major within the Sociology Department. The normal teaching load is two courses each semester.
A strong candidate will contribute a social science perspective to a university-wide, interdisciplinary initiative to enhance curriculum and research focused on Integrated Security as a Destination Area (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html), broadly defined to focus on understanding and fostering a world in which individuals, institutions, and nations are secured by technology and social systems that follow ethical principles and promote values of social justice as well as address inequity. In addition, since criminal behavior and the control thereof is intricately related to issues of equity and disparity, this position would logically connect with the Equity and Social Disparity for the Human Condition Strategic Growth Area (https://www.provost.vt.edu/destination_areas/areas_of_focus/da_esdhc.html) as mass incarceration is one of the most pressing social disparities facing the nation. Cover letters should address explicitly how the candidate’s expertise addresses such issues, and candidates should be prepared to describe how they will do so in their relevant courses.
The Department of Sociology grants the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in sociology with available options in Africana Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. We also offer an undergraduate major in criminology. The Department of Sociology is the academic home of programs in Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies, and houses the Center for Race and Social Policy Research, the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, and the Youth Inequality Justice Lab. We encourage applicants who can contribute to these programs as well.
