Advanced Engineering Design Laboratory Assistant Manager
Job Description
The College of Engineering seeks a skilled, experienced Assistant Manager for the Advanced Engineering Design Laboratory. The Advanced Engineering Design Laboratory Assistant Manager will facilitate the operation of the laboratory, manage and ensure safety and coordinate outreach activities for design projects. The Assistant Manager will oversee and supervise all operations (facilities, purchasing, and safety) at the Advanced Engineering Design Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing instructions to students on proper use of lab equipment, ensuring lab safety compliance, protocols and procedures related to design and fabrication, overseeing calibration and maintenance of lab equipment, maintaining cleanliness and appearance of the lab, providing technical and design support to student teams, along with promoting Virginia Tech, College of Engineering and Design Teams to prospective students, corporate sponsors, and other stakeholders, providing tours of research lab to visitors, families, sponsors, and participating in continuing education programs to maintain and upgrade skills.
The Advanced Engineering Design Laboratory is a unique educational laboratory that will be home to award-winning student projects for Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering. These teams include: Rocketry@VT, SEDs Rocketry, Orbital Launch Vehicle Team (OLVT), NASA Student Launch Initiative Team, inVents Rocketry, RockSat, Mars Ice Challenge, Mars Madness, Wind Turbine Team, AUVSI Robotics Competition Team and 3D Printed Aircraft Team.
Required Qualifications
• Previous experience managing a laboratory (preferably in educational setting)
• Significant experience in the fabrication of complex precision designs typical of research models and hardware
• General knowledge of the engineering design process.
• Ability to work closely and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
• Experience using computer software (e.g. MS Office, Adobe)
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently
• Must be able to safely move and handle items weighing up to 50 lbs
Preferred Qualifications
• Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Machining Technology from an accredited college or university
• Possess vocational level training in machining and shop safety
• Providing maintenance and operational support of 3D Printers
• Training and experience utilizing computers and computer operated machinery, in particular CNC milling machines and lathes.
• Prior experience working with undergraduate students
• Knowledge of research laboratory safety policies, regulations, and practices
• Ability to demonstrate, train and instruct others on proper usage and handling of equipment and tools.
• Experience using university’s procurement system
