Job Description

The Department of Food Science and Technology ( in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences invites applications for a part-time (1500 hrs./year) wage position.

This position will serve as an administrative assistant to the departmental faculty, executive secretary and fiscal manager. They will assist with:
● processing of orders through HokieMart
● travel arrangements and managing travel through the Chrome River system
● departmental shipping, mailings
● compiling and organizing documents needed for grant applications
● assisting faculty with OSP grant budgets, managements of grant funds
● addressing routine fiscal issues (hiring students, fixed asset handling, maintaining records and filing)
● processing transactions for a number of accounts (VT and VT foundation)
● other general administrative responsibilities that faculty may need assistance with

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
--Demonstrated experience maintaining and reconciling accounts
--Customer service experience working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
--Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft office software
--Ability to work independently and effectively in a small team environment
--Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
--Knowledge of Virginia Tech’s Controller’s policies and procedures
--Demonstrated experience with financial systems such as HokieMart (procurement system), Banner, Chrome River System or comparable software and/or experience with other Virginia Tech systems.
