The W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake is situated on a 120 acre lakefront property that offers modern meeting faculties, on-site catering, dormitory and hotel style lodging options, and a wide selection of recreation opportunities, including facilitated team building programs, a nature center, and shooting education facilities.
The Mission of the W. E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake is
to provide dynamic, research-based, hands-on learning experiences for 4-H youth, other youth, and adults that will enable them to become self-directing, contributing and productive members of society. During the past 50 years more than 145,000 youth from central, western, and southwestern Virginia have been to 4-H Camp at the W. E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center. The Skelton 4-H Center provides a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for youth to interact with their peers as well as caring, attentive adults who will serve as role models for their week of camp.
In concert with the leadership of the Board of Directors and the State 4-H Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension, the director’s duties will include operational management, policy development, resource development, fiscal management, strategic planning and other duties as necessary.
The Center Director is accountable and responsible to the State 4-H Program Leader (Virginia Cooperative Extension), the 4-H Center’s Board of Directors and reports to the State 4-H Office. The Center Director will be evaluated by the State 4-H Program Leader with input from the 4-H Center’s Board of Directors and the State 4-H Camping Specialist. This position is a non-tenure track, administrative/professional faculty position, at the rank of Lecturer.
Required Qualifications
Master’s Degree required, or a combination of a bachelor’s degree and extensive applicable experience, in youth or adult education, hospitality management, business management, recreation management, or related discipline. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in hospitality management, education, business management, resource development, personnel management, public relations, and marketing. Ability to communicate effectively is essential. The ability to utilize business computer applications, email and internet applications for communications and information are necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Extension/4-H experience or other youth serving organization is preferred. Significant experience in partnership and business development within a non-profit organization setting.
