Position Summary:

The Wattenberg lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, has openings for a postdoctoral scientist to study the role of regulation of sphingolipid biosynthesis in production of myelin in the central nervous system. To study these, we utilize in vivo mouse genetics, confocal microscopy, lipid analysis, enzymatic assays, electron microscopy, protein biochemistry, and manipulation of genes, cell cultures and state-of-the-art biochemical and molecular approaches. We offer an intellectual, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research environment to support career goals and provide access to modern facilities. Candidates with background knowledge and hands-on experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics, confocal and electron microscopy, and protein biochemistry as well computational skills in genetic analysis and protein structure will be considered. Skills in sphingolipid biology are particularly welcome.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design and perform experiments
  • Analyze, interpret and discuss experimental data with PI
  • Write first drafts of manuscripts
Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • Strong research background in sphingolipids, cell biology, molecular biology, and or mouse models
  • Hands-on experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics, confocal and electron microscopy, and protein biochemistry as well computational skills in genetic analysis and protein structure
  • Evidence of successful completion of a research project (publications)
  • Ability to work independently; interpret, present, and discuss experimental data
  • Excellent communications skills
  • This will be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or MD/PhD (or equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Preferred experience in sphingolipid biology
