Mission or Goal of Unit:

Our mission is to provide superb clinical care to our patients, educate the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and expand the orthopaedic knowledge base through basic, clinical and translational research. The department offers excellent, evidence-based, efficient patient care, thorough and responsive consultation in orthopaedic trauma services, effective supervision, teaching and mentoring of orthopaedic housestaff and students and streamlined throughput process for admitted orthopaedic patients across the health system.

Chief Purpose of this position:

We are seeking candidates to directly care for patients on the orthopaedic trauma service line; improve quality and efficiency of orthopaedic services at VCU Health System; provide prompt high-quality orthopaedic trauma care; develop orthopaedic faculty with interest in new technologies, clinical research and teaching; mentor residents and fellows; work within the hospital system and with other departments to provide multidisciplinary care for general orthopaedic patients.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching
Staff inpatient housestaff teaching service with learners including medical students, interns and residents; use contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practice; demonstrate effective teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher for learners at all levels; complete required evaluations of learners in a timely manner.

Research
Participate in clinical and administrative research, according to skills, interest and funding; research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations; participation may be as principle investigator or co-investigator; maintain a level of scholarship in Orthopaedic Surgery consistent with academic rank.

Service
Work with institutional staff and administration to attain the strategic objectives of VCU Health System, including patient safety, patient and other customer satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception, and fiscal health.

Clinical
Admit and manage patients who present through the orthopaedic trauma service, co-management of patients on other services, triage medicine patient requiring admission in the Emergency Department and non-medical services and non-VCU hospitals; join colleagues in assuring coverage 24-hours a day, every day of the year; comply in a timely manner with all institutional policies for professional work including credentialing, documentation, billing; work effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional team.

Other
Ensure compliance with all regulatory and regulatory reimbursement requirement.

Required Qualifications:
  • M.D. degree and ABOS certification/eligibility in Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Record of scholarly publication in peer review journals
  • Direct experience managing complex orthopaedic trauma cases, competence in standard inpatient procedures
  • A solid understanding of the orthopaedic trauma role and function and interest in teaching and growth in an academic setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, providing effective communication, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University
