Data Scientist in the Computational Pathology & AI Center of Excellence (CPACE) at the University of Pittsburgh

RANK/TITLE: Assistant Professor (1-5 years of experience) Appointment Stream.

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Pathology is seeking an Assistant Professor Rank Appointment Stream in the field of Data Science within the Computational Pathology & AI Center of Excellence (CPACE). We are seeking a highly qualified Data Scientist with expertise in image analytics, experience with large language models, and familiarity with tabular data machine learning studies to join our AI Center. The candidate should possess a Master's or Ph.D. in a related field, demonstrate strong programming skills in Python, and be proficient in a range of data science platforms. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking projects in a collaborative and innovative environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Will lead and contribute to image analytics, large language models, and tabular data machine learning projects from inception to completion.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize machine learning algorithms focused on image data, natural language processing, and tabular data.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis and feature engineering for high-dimensional datasets, including image, text, and tabular data.
  • Utilize statistical methods to analyze data and generate actionable insights.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to translate complex algorithms into deployable software solutions.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff.
  • Present findings and updates to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field or MD degree with strong background in data science.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Proficiency in one or more data science platforms such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, MONAI, and Scikit-learn.
  • Knowledge of deep learning techniques, such as Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformers
  • Experience with large language models.
  • Familiarity with tabular data machine learning studies (preferred)
  • Solid understanding of basic statistical analysis and familiarity with statistical software tools.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals or a portfolio showcasing relevant projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Assistant Professor (1-5 years of experience)

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in healthcare analytics is a plus.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms like AWS or Azure.
  • Expertise in data visualization tools such as but not linked to Tableau, Matplotlib, or Seaborn.
  • Familiarity with data preprocessing techniques like normalization, data augmentation, and encoding.
  • Experience with data storage and manipulation tools, such as SQL databases and NoSQL databases (preferred)
  • Proficiency in version control systems like Git.
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies such as Agile or Scrum.
  • Ability to produce well-documented code and to annotate machine learning models.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a focus on data quality.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical mindset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams.
