General Definition of Work

Under the administrative direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Program Associate performs a wide variety of functions in the area of recreation programming by assisting the Recreation Supervisor with planning, coordinating, and overseeing recreation programs.

Shifts may require evenings and weekends, Monday through Sunday, as scheduled.

Essential Functions

  • Provides support to the Recreation Supervisor(s) in the planning, implementation, and supervision of recreation activities, events, and staff; program areas include, but are not limited to, youth athletics, indoor aquatics, outdoor programs, and adult/senior programs
  • Promotes, assists, and supervises recreation and fitness programs and activities
  • Provides a support role in the execution of lesson or program plans (activities, crafts, field trips, guest speakers)
  • Administers policies with respect for scheduling, safety, and customer service
  • Assists with the coordination of facility use, master calendar, and employees
  • Schedules facility rentals setup/take-down meeting rooms and courts
  • Assists with daily records, attendance sheets, incident reports, and accident reports
  • Assists Recreation Supervisor to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction
  • Assists Recreation Supervisor in planning, developing, implementing, and managing athletic programs and activities
  • Enforces league rules and regulations
  • Assists with the recruitment and selection process of part-time staff and volunteers
  • Handles public concerns, problems, or suggestions in a calm and professional manner
  • Prepares materials for grant and award applications
  • Assists with the coordination and provides direction to volunteers and program personnel
  • May have to serve as sports official on occasion
  • Performs other duties as apparent or assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the principles, practices, rules, safety requirements and equipment used to develop and supervise various recreational programs and activities
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with the public, staff, citizens, and community organizations
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and oversee the work of volunteers and part-time employees
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and comply with Town and departmental policies and procedures
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be highly detail oriented, organized, and proactive and possess the ability to prioritize projects effectively while handing multiple projects at the same time
  • Ability to work evening hours and weekends
  • Has the ability to work independently
  • Regular attendance is essential for this position
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED certification required
  • Prior experience in assisting with recreation and athletic programming is preferred
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • First Aid & CPR and AED certification required

Environment:
  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and at indoor and outdoor recreational facilities
  • Travel required to different locations
  • May be exposed to inclement weather conditions
  • Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces
Physical:
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, and mobility to work in an office and recreation facility setting
  • Stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight
  • Operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard
  • Travel to other recreation sites; and to verbally communicate to exchange information
