General Definition of Work

The Public Works Technician- Urban Forestry position performs various work related to the Town's Urban Forestry program to include tree and shrub identification and inspections, grounds maintenance, and landscaping. Works with public works crews, community groups, and residents to implement urban forestry initiatives. Oversees contractors involved with hazard tree abatement and right-of-way encroachment projects. Performs a variety of tree care related field work, under varying weather conditions.
Shift:
Spring Shift:
[April 1st - August 31st] Monday - Friday, 6:30 am - 3:00 pm
Fall Shift:
[September 1st - March 31st] Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

  • Performs tree and shrub identification and participates in tree maintenance, including planting, mulching, watering, pruning, and other various maintenance needs
  • Evaluates hazard trees and encroachments on town properties and in the public right-of-way
  • Performs all tree care related field work
  • Performs various landscape and right-of-way maintenance tasks in high traffic and public areas
  • Operates all tree care and landscaping equipment, including bucket trucks and aerial lifts
  • Oversees contractors performing tree related work in the right-of-way
  • Responds to citizen requests
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Through knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used for tree care
  • Considerable knowledge of woody plant and tree pests and diseases, and their treatment
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic work zone safety standards
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, citizens, and volunteers
  • Ability to use a personal computer and tablet with applicable software
Education and Experience
  • This position requires a high school diploma or GED certification
  • A minimum of five years' work experience in arboriculture or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
  • A valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License - Class B, or ability of obtain within six months, and an acceptable driving record required
  • A VDAC Commercial Pesticide applicator or Registered Technician Certification within 6 months
  • Position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and will be included in the random drug and alcohol screening program
Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires smelling
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self- contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
