General Definition of Work

The Public Works Technician for the Sewer Maintenance division will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance of the Town's sanitary sewer system. This position works under the supervision of a Utilities Division Supervisor or designee.
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Essential Functions

  • Operates a variety of equipment including sewer washer/jetter, combination sewer vacuum hydro excavating machine, remote controlled crawl camera, snow removal equipment, and lawn care equipment
  • Performs manual labor for sewer maintenance, installation, and repairs
  • Inspects sewer lines; interprets television system inspection data sewer lines for acceptance and rehab
  • Assists water and sewer crew with installations and repairs
  • Manages road closures traffic control for work zones
  • Assists with snow removal and leaf collection
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the traffic laws and work zones
  • General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for confined space entry
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
  • Must possess a moderate knowledge of personal computers and mobile devices, and be willing to train in the usage of internal software applications as required
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, associates, contractors and the general public
Education and Experience:
  • Two to five years' work experience in Public Works or related area is required for this position
  • High school diploma or GED certification
Special Requirements:
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record
  • A Virginia Class B Commercial Driver's license with tanker endorsement is required
Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires tasting or smelling
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
