Front Desk Attendant/Aquatics
- General Definition of Work
Provides administrative, reception and program support for the Aquatic Center. Requires high customer contact both in person and on the phone. Requires clerical skills including typing, filing, office machine operation, cash register operation, maintenance of records, and the ability to undertake multiple tasks simultaneously. The Front Desk Attendant requires excellent customer service skills and is the contact point for patrons at the Blacksburg Aquatic Center.
- Essential Functions

- Perform clerical duties as required such as maintaining logs, with Word programming.
- Assist recreation staff in their duties and assignments.
- Manage the phone activity including providing general knowledge to callers.
- Manage walk-in traffic.
- Perform membership identification process.
- Maintain common areas and office equipment.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness of locker rooms/rest rooms, lobby area and pool decks as necessary.
- Assist with mailing.
- Handle cash receivables and operate a cash register/computer.
- Contribute to a positive work environment.
- Attend staff meetings and monthly in-services.
- Assists with opening and closing procedures.
- Any and all other job duties assigned, to include but not limited to camps, special events, front desk, swim lessons, and swim team.
- Front Desk staff is to wear only approved staff clothing.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of current office practices, methods, and procedures. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to positively interact with the general public. Ability to efficiently coordinate many activities and work effectively with other staff in a positive work environment.
Education and Experience:
Customer service experience preferred. Basic computer and phone skills required. Cash handling experience is desired. High School Diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age. Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.
- Physical Requirements
Demonstrated ability to use office equipment including computers, cash register, phone systems and photocopies in a highly structured and multitasked environment. The ability to use a personal computer is required, along with basic use of Microsoft software such as Word and Excel. Must have the ability to prevents accidents through rule enforcement; remain calm in emergency situations, analyze and correct facility hazards; as well as the ability to learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures. Must be able to lift or move equipment/chemicals up to 80 pounds with assistance and lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Must stand and/or sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects. Must be able to occasionally push, pull or balance. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone and through face-to-face communication is needed. May be exposed to chlorine or other pool chemicals, heat, blood or other body fluids.
