Equipment Operator III- Water/Sewer
- General Definition of Work
This position will perform advanced skills using a variety of heavy construction equipment. Advanced skilled tasks include, but not limited to; excavating for water and sewer taps, fire hydrants, manholes, water meters, and water and sewer lines to correct grade: excavating around utility lines with minimal clearance without causing damage: and operating in rights-of-way next to moving traffic. Qualified applicants must be experienced and skilled in tasks related to concrete construction and general street maintenance. This position will act as a supervisor in the absence of the crew supervisor. This position will be required to be on call for after hour emergencies. This position will assists with snow removal operations and seasonal collection services.
Shift hours and /or days to be worked-
September-March Mon-Fri 7:30am-4:00pm
April-August Tues-Fri 6:30am-5:00pm

Heavy equipment operation
Hand tools and small equipment
Water and sewer main construction
Installing, repairing, and replacing water meters, fire hydrants, and valves
Constructing large and small diameter taps on live water lines
Dump truck operation
Education and Experience
A high school diploma or GED is required, as well as a minimum of four year’s related construction experience.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Skilled in the operation of heavy equipment and have knowledge of standard construction practices and principles; ability to install and repair water and sewer infrastructure; thorough knowledge of VDOT work zone requirements and the ability to safely work in and around the roadway; skill in the use various hand tools and construction equipment; ability to operate a dump truck with snow plow during snow removal operations
A valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License – Class A and an excellent driving record are required.
VDOT Basic Work Zone Traffic Control and Flagger Certification
Trench Safety and Confined Space training
- Physical Requirements
Qualified applicants must possess each of the following: the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly, the ability to work in a crouched position for extended periods of time, the ability to work outside in varying weather conditions, and the ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees.
