GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs routine manual skilled and semi-skilled labor such as laying out and marking fields for various sports, carpentry, painting and masonry repairs. May supervise part time employees and inmate work crews. Performs related work as required.

Must have a valid Virginia Driver's License with a good driving record - CDL not required. 
Must be available to work Monday - Friday, 7:00AM to 3:30PM. Occasional evenings, weekends and/or holidays as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals and other materials used in the repair and maintenance of County facilities
  • Maintains and repairs park grounds and buildings Loads and unloads a variety of tools and equipment used in ground maintenance
  • Performs light construction and maintenance of County facilities including grounds care Assists in Roanoke County snow removal operations as needed
  • Cleans, maintains and repairs a large variety of park and maintenance equipment Operates power mowers, weedeaters, chipper machines and related equipment used to mow grass and clean and maintain grounds
  • Lays out, marks and maintains game sites for sports such as baseball, softball, T-ball, football, tennis and soccer
  • Moves furniture and other equipment
  • Works varied days, shifts, weekends, holidays and subject to twenty-four (24) hour call

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES

Education
Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience
Required: Some experience in the operation of motorized equipment and performance of general maintenance activities

Certifications/Licenses
Required: Valid Virginia drivers license with a good driving record Preferred: CDL (Commercial Drivers License) Class B with an air brake endorsement or must be obtained within the first six months of employment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the operation of pick up trucks, dump trucks and trailers and motorized maintenance equipment and manual tools
General knowledge of traffic rules and regulations as related to the operation of maintenance vehicles
General knowledge in the use and care of common hand, electric and gas powered tools. Ability to maintain and repair a wide range of facilities and equipment, which may involve carpentry, painting, masonry repairs or other skills
Ability to perform 24 hour on-call responsibilities and work varied shifts as assigned
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions. safety labels, and warnings
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable work or weather conditions
Ability to understand and follow instructions relating to the safe usage of tools, chemicals, and other materials
Ability to organize and perform maintenance functions independently without work-site supervision
Ability to demonstrate mathematical aptitude to layout athletic fields

Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
