Integrated Library System/Technology Coordinator
- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Oversees, develops, improves, maintains and/or assists with shared technology resources for the Roanoke Valley Libraries consortium, including the integrated library system (ILS), e-resource platform(s) and consortium intranet.
- ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Participates in consortium committee work as needed
- Represents the libraries to agencies, organizations and the community in a positive and professional manner
- Oversees the operation, security, maintenance, performance, documentation, updates projects and vendor communication of the consortium’s integrated library system (ILS)
- Controls database access and implements secure connections to third-party systems and APIs
- Seeks out additional features or services of benefit to the library community or staff, as appropriate and approved by directors
- Provides technical support for ILS-related hardware
- Works collaboratively with the public service/circulation and cataloging staff to ensure accuracy and reliability of the data and rules maintained within the ILS
- Generates and provides clear statistics, reports and information on a routine or special request basis to provide timely data and analysis to directors and other staff, including recommendations for action when appropriate
- Develops and maintains a statistics dashboard for consortium member libraries
- As required, conducts research, evaluation and recommendations of prospective platform migrations and feature development
- Works collaboratively with web and digital presence staff
- Develops, troubleshoots and maintains functionality of a consortium-wide intranet, seeking user feedback, pursuing improvements and updating regularly
- Oversees selection, implementation, maintenance and performance of consortium-shared e-resource platforms (e.g., Overdrive)
- Instructs Roanoke Valley Libraries staff in the understanding and use of the ILS, intranet and other related consortium-shared technology resources
- Attends workshops, conferences or other training as required
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
- EducationRequired: Bachelor’s degreePreferred: Master's of Library Science degree from ALA-accredited college or university.
ExperienceRequired: Two (2) years’ experience working in a library setting, particularly circulation or cataloging.
Preferred: Two (2) years’ experience in ILS administration, database administration, or administration of other mission-critical line-of-business systems
Certifications/LicensesRequired: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Able to work independently

- Has demonstrated experience with:
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills
- Developing and maintaining scripts or other tools to automate tasks
- Create scripts to export data in various formats (XML, CSV, Excel, etc.)
- Using Perl or similar C-family scripting language
- Developing custom SQL queries and reports
- Basic website technologies: HTML/CSS/XML/JavaScript
- Using APIs to update databases
- Working with software vendors to troubleshoot system problems and outages
- Working with software vendors to communicate user needs and advocate for product improvements or discounts
- (Preferred) Demonstrates knowledge of library data, including bibliographic record structures and core library operations, such as circulation, cataloging and discovery
- (Preferred) Understands principles and practices of library automation systems, including but not limited to RFID and automated materials handling systems
- (Preferred) Has demonstrated experience with:
- Database querying for an integrated library system
- Classic ASP.NET or .NET framework
- Advanced website technology skills
- Integrating with data analytics platforms
- Integrating with collection management platforms (e.g., Collection HQ)
- (Preferred) Possesses touch typing skills
Additional RequirementsSubject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results. Good physical condition. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination.
