Fleet Supervisor (Open Until Filled)
- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs complex technical and administrative work in the management and operations of the Roanoke County Fleet Service Center. Manages the work of staff and sublet contractors involved in the daily operations. Responsible for oversight of the asset management work order system utilized by the Fleet Division. May perform activities such as directing, scheduling, or asset repairs as needed. Requires the ability to make independent decisions on procedures and operations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager and the Assistant Director of General Services. Performs other duties as assigned.
- ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs leadership roles in the skilled, technical and administrative areas of the operation to ensure an efficient service department with a goal of customer satisfaction
- Supervises Fleet Technicians, and communicates daily shop operations to the Fleet Manager
- Supervises and prioritizes the service department schedule to ensure that all assets are maintained in a safe and efficient operating condition
- Ensures vehicle bays, general shop, and parts areas are in a safe, clean and orderly state
- Assists the Fleet Manager and Assistant Director in the compilation and analysis of data related to the assets maintained
- Plans and implements training programs including new employee orientation and safety procedures for Fleet Technicians
- Assists with the evaluation of prospective employees, subsequent interviews and the decision-making process for new hires
- Fosters performance development and communication through annual evaluations of the division staff
- Recommends disciplinary or discharge measures for assigned employees in accordance with County policies
- Serves as a proficient user and resource of the asset management software to include the efficient collection of data, scheduling, inventory and reporting
- Communicates regularly with internal and external customers
- Enforces documented policies and procedures for fleet operations and safety
- Coordinates with outside vendors for vehicle and equipment repair
- Operates complex computerized diagnostic testing equipment in order to diagnose engine and other system malfunctions
- Functions as a working supervisor to provide hands on assistance as needed
- Performs preventive maintenance, service and repairs as required
- Performs Virginia State Inspections and completes necessary safety and related repairs
- Functions as back-up to the Fleet Manager
- REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
Education Required: High school diploma plus successful completion of a minimum of a two (2) year program in auto/truck maintenance, business, public works, or a related field OR any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Experience Required: Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
Certifications/ Licenses Required: Valid Virginia Driver's License with good driving record. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and Commonwealth of Virginia Certified Safety Inspector or ability to obtain each.
Preferred: Applicable industry standard certifications or ability to obtain
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fleet management and garage operations
- Extensive knowledge of the methods, procedures, materials and tools associated with fleet management and maintenance including diesel and heavy construction equipment
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade
- General knowledge of computer software which is used to maintain fleets of vehicles
- Skill in the use and operation of shop tools, air tools and machinery
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions including complex technical vehicle information
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, user departments, outside vendors and service providers
- Ability to schedule and supervise the work of technical and skilled workers
- Ability to communicate routine as well as highly technical issues effectively through oral and written methods
Additional Requirements Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Must maintain all required certifications and attend courses and seminars to enhance knowledge and skills. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
