Family Services Supervisor
- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs difficult professional work supervising a unit of Family Services Specialists and/or Senior Family Services Specialists assigned to a specialized unit, (e.g., foster care or child protective services) or a unit which provides the full range of family services. Performs other duties as required.
- ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Supervises staff.
- Sets and enforces objectives for quality and quantity of work performed by unit.
- Evaluates social service programs and program budgets.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external agencies.
- Identifies training needs.
- Recommends policy changes based on their evaluation of program effectiveness.
- Deals with difficult or dangerous cases.
- Interprets the program to other agencies and to the public.
- Participates in community planning and development of new resources, jobs and community work sites.
- Interviews applicants for positions.
- Serves as department Child Protective Services or Adult Services Coordinator.
- Develops annual plans for service delivery.
- Conducts activities to establish and maintain public relations with businesses, churches, and private/public sector entities and to promote Welfare Reform.
- REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
- EducationRequired: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in social work, psychology, counseling or other human services field.ExperienceRequired: Extensive experience as a Family Services Specialist or related position.Preferred: Some supervisory experience.Certifications/ LicensesRequired: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques.
- Thorough knowledge of employment and/or social work principles, practices and treatment modalities and of social, economic, health and employment problems that face individuals, groups and communities.
- General knowledge of human behavior.
- Ability to plan and manage work activities of subordinates and assist others in their planning and management.
- Ability to develop programs and procedures.
- Ability to make decisions in difficult situations involving critical issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Skill in the application of treatment and intervention approaches.
- Ability to interpret laws, policies and regulations regarding human services, ensure compliance and recommend needed changes.
- Skilled in use of personal computer.

Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
