Cataloging Librarian
- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
- Performs responsible professional work requiring the performance of specialized tasks in the technical services department of the Library System. Makes complex decisions involving the creation, use and management of machine-readable bibliographic records according to nationally accepted standards. Works under the general supervision of the Technical Services Librarian or other library professional. Performs other duties as assigned.
- ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- · Receives, catalogs and classifies library materials including monographs, serials, audio/visual materials, electronic resources, and ephemera· Interprets and applies AACR2/RDA, authority, metadata, and other professional standards.· Checks, revises, and enhances existing catalog records.· Maintains integrated system’s bibliographic records.· Actively seeks to improve catalog access points for the public.· Provides professional assistance to library staff in answering inquiries concerning the application of cataloging principles and practices.· Supervises preparation of books for bindery.· Assists in the development and maintenance of departmental procedures, aids, print and electronic guides, automated reports and informational materials, tools, and devices.· Participates in RVL consortium meetings and projects, as assigned.· Assists with collection maintenance through development, analysis, and de-selection.· Supervises volunteers.· Maintains inventory of departmental supplies and informs Technical Services Librarian of departmental needs.· Participates in RVL consortium meetings and projects, as assigned.· Demonstrates an interest in professional development; keeps abreast of current trends, new products and professional techniques.· Participates in activities of professional library organizations.
- REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
- EducationRequired: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited program.ExperienceRequired: Experience in professional library work or comparable public, retail, or technical services experience. Recent substantive training or accredited coursework in relevant areas may be an acceptable substitute for professional library experience, particularly when combined with other responsible and related experience.Certifications/ LicensesMust be eligible for certification as a professional librarian by the State of Virginia.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods and principles of contemporary bibliographic-maintenance standards and practices, including the Anglo-American cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal Classification system, Library of Congress subject headings, OCLC/MARC records, Resource Description and Access, authority control, and integrated library system (ILS) products.
Thorough knowledge of English, spelling, mathematics, and basic statistics.
Technical expertise utilizing and maintaining ILS databases and products.
Ability to maintain accurate records and make reports.
Ability to catalog and classify materials.
Ability to train, motivate and develop paraprofessional staff
Ability to work well with library personnel in other departments or branches
Ability to maintain good relations with the citizens in the community.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Additional RequirementsSubject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results.
