Assistant Director of Recreation
- GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs difficult professional and administrative work overseeing recreation programs and community/recreation centers of the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department. Manages and oversees the planning, organizing and development of recreation programs and services for teens, senior citizens, adults and youth. Manages and oversees the special service sections that provide therapeutic recreation services, after school childcare, and outdoor education. Supervision is exercised over employees involved in the recreation division. May be responsible for the operation of the department in the absence of the Director. Performs other duties as assigned.
- ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Directs and supervises a comprehensive recreation program through facilities, athletics and special events
- Prepares and manages budgets, reports, and publications
- Oversees recreation program development that focuses on revenue growth
- Assists in establishing community based recreation needs
- Plans, assigns, and manages activities of assigned staff
- Performs special projects as required
- Oversees program scheduling and completion
- Assists in preparing Capital Improvement and Capital Maintenance programs
- Performs public relations activities through speeches, news releases and other media
- Works flexible schedules as needed
- Manages the operation of the department in the absence of the Director as assigned
- REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
- EducationRequired: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation or a related field.ExperienceRequired: Five (5) or more years experience in recreation programming and management including experience in a responsible supervisory position.Certifications/ LicensesRequired: Valid Virginia's driver's license with good driving recordKnowledge, Skills and Abilities· Thorough knowledge of all phases of community recreation activities, administration, and budgeting; and of planning, organizing, and directing recreation programs· Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing· Ability to complete assigned projects· Ability to monitor performance and objectives· Ability to supervise and motivate a workforce that has very diverse recreational functionsAdditional RequirementsSubject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results.
