Manager of Community and Academic Learning
Job Description Summary
The Manager of Community and Academic Learning works closely with the director of teaching and learning, the Betsy Main Babcock Deputy Director, and departmental colleagues; develops, coordinates, and facilitates the museum's public programs that respond to human concerns through intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic experiences; develops and maintains collaborations with university departments and other arts organizations; participates in development events, grant proposal preparation, as well as donor and volunteer cultivation; actively works to expand and diversify the audiences served by the museum.
Please Note: The work in this position will be carried out on site at Reynolda (with hybrid work models utilized as necessary due to the current COVID-19 pandemic), and the qualified candidate will commit to living in or relocating to the Piedmont Triad area.
Essential Functions:
- Serves as academic liaison for the museum to local university departments and institutes.
- Contracts and collaborates with Wake Forest University and other local faculty for programs and interpreter training.
- Recruits, selects, and contracts with professional artists, curators, and speakers to present a broad range of mission-based lectures, courses, art study trips, drama, concerts, literature discussions, readings, festivals, artists' talks and other programs throughout the year for adult and intergenerational audiences; coordinates reservations for travel, lodging and accommodations for out-of-town speakers.
- Develops and maintains ties with local and regional arts and history groups.
- Assists in the interpretation of the museum's collections to the public as a participant in the permanent and changing exhibition planning process.
- With other departments, conducts evaluation/assessment of program events.
- Develops curriculum of tour offerings and collaborates with colleagues in the Teaching & Learning department to train interpreters leading tours.
- Coordinate member programs, including art day trips.
- Works in close collaboration with the departments of Marketing and Communications in recruiting program audience(s), Event and Program Management Department to identify and secure staff and equipment support as needed for programs, Development to make the best use of educational opportunities for the long-term financial stability of the Museum, and Curatorial to select scholars to lecture in support of exhibitions.
- Manages internship program from recruitment, supervision of learning and projects (or assisting colleagues supervising interns), and evaluation.
- Collaborates with Teaching & Learning department colleagues to plan and facilitate docent/interpreter training.
- Leads tours of the house, estate, collections, and temporary exhibitions as needed for public and VIP audiences.
- Works on special projects as assigned.
- Establishes and monitors budget.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Functions:
Speaks on behalf of the Museum when called upon, for the news media, development functions, or at conferences. Assists the Betsy Main Babcock Deputy Director and Advancement Department with talking points for public programs and development functions.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree in the humanities (history, public history, art history, studio art, music, literature or American Studies) and three years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of community audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues and community partners to meet shared goals, with established as well as new, innovative programs.
- Organizational, fiscal, and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google web-based office applications, including Mail, Sheets, Docs, and Calendar.
- Availability to work weekend and evening hours.
- Ability to work on site at Reynolda House during events and other portions of the week.
- Valid driver license with good driving record; must be insurable.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Master's degree in the humanities.
- Public speaking skills.
- Teaching experience, formal or informal.
- Media experience.
Accountabilities:
- Supervision of interns and/or fellows.
- Prepares and monitors public programming budget.
- Responsible for own work.
- Develops contracts with performers etc.
Compensation:
Salary available upon request; position includes WFU staff benefits applicable to Reynolda House employees.
