The University Center for Human Values seeks qualified scholars to teach precepts for the fall 2023 course "Practical Ethics" at Princeton University. Applicants must have taken a course in ethics. Appointments are anticipated to begin on September 1, 2023, and will span the fall 2023 semester. Position duty time will be based on student enrollments and departmental need. Interested applicants must submit a CV, a letter detailing their knowledge of ethics and their teaching experience, and names and contact information for up to three professors who can testify to their teaching experience. Letters of recommendation will only be requested if candidates are shortlisted. Course description: The course will challenge students to examine their life from an ethical perspective. Should altruism guide our life, and if so, what is effective altruism? Should we be sharing our wealth with people who will otherwise die from poverty-related causes? How should we live and act in an era in which human activity is changing the climate of our planet? What ethical considerations are raised by eating meat and other animal products? We will also consider the Supreme Court's recent decision on abortion, and if the traditional doctrine of the sanctity of human life can be defended. Students will be encouraged to question their own ethical beliefs on these and other issues, and in the process to explore the extent to which reason and argument can play a role in everyday ethical decision-making. Review of applications to begin immediately and continue until positions are filled. These positions are subject to the University's background check policy. Degree Requirement: Advanced Degree required; Ph.D. preferred.
