Job Description Summary
The Department Chair of Education plays a critical role in the academic life of the College and is responsible for carrying out the College's vision and mission as they relate specifically to teaching, learning, and student success. Reporting to the Dean of the Professional Studies and Community Education Division, the department chair is responsible for creating an environment conducive to collegiality, learning, and developing and implementing instructional strategies that support institutional goals and student aspirations. The Chair engages faculty and other internal and external stakeholders to: (1) develop, expand, and continuously improve high quality programs within the division, designed to address community needs; (2) encourage innovation and creativity in teaching and learning; (3) promote and encourage application of new and relevant knowledge within the departmental disciplines; (4) work collegially with the Professional Studies and Community Education Dean and Associate Dean to ensure student progression, retention and completion within the programs within the department; (5) actively promote and advocate for College's implementation of guided pathways; and (6) support the development of stackable credentials and degrees that provide seamless articulation with secondary and postsecondary partners as well as the College's continuing education programs and offerings.

No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of a master's degree.
- A minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience in a discipline within the Education department (Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary Education) in an accredited institution of higher education at the rank of associate professor (or comparable) or higher; or five years' experience in workforce training and development.
- Previous administrative, supervisory, and/or leadership experience.
- Experience in developing and delivering professional development.
- Previous experience and ability to effectively and consistently lead and motivate others.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community.
- Effective and consistent organizational, conflict resolution, and management skills.
- Proven teaching success in higher education.
- Demonstrated knowledge and achievement in curriculum and program development and management.
- Ability to quickly gain knowledge and understanding of the College's organization, goals, objective, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of the requirements of accreditation agencies, if applicable.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, faculty, staff, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.
- Ability to establish priorities and make difficult choices among competing demands.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Leadership
- Oversee faculty development and sustainability of pedagogically sound program curricula and recommendations for new programs of study, as determined by local and regional labor market needs.
- Collaborate within the Teaching, Learning, and Student Success area to ensure opportunities for stackable credentials allow students to seamlessly move between continuing education to credit programs, where appropriate.
- Lead and coordinate departmental planning in concert with the division's and College's strategic plan.
- Interpret and apply College policy for departmental staff, faculty, and students.
- Convene monthly department meetings to address department, division, and College strategic initiatives and ensure alignment to guided pathways.
- Maintain current knowledge of trends and innovations in community colleges generally, and in the programs of study within the department; communicate and share this knowledge regularly with staff and faculty.
- Serve as a liaison between the faculty, staff, and administration.
- Work with academic coordinators and faculty to map educationally coherent pathways with clearly defined learning outcomes that are aligned with students' end goals.
- Work with academic coordinators and faculty to plan for curriculum additions, modifications, and deletions; set priorities for resource needs; provide program analysis.
- Support the Associate Dean and Dean of the Professional Studies and Community Education Division to oversee the promotion, organization, coordination, and evaluation of the courses and curricula of the division.
- Create nurturing and caring environments for students to pursue their programs of study.
- Meet the needs of students through faculty engagement.
- Collaborate with Student Affairs to provide an understanding of program requirements to ensure accurate and timely communication to current and incoming students.
- Use of student success data to determine needs for departmental expectations and professional development.
- Ensure current and new programs of study are relevant to market and transfer needs.
- Develop and implement, in conjunction with faculty, staff and division administrators, departmental strategies focused on student retention and graduation.
- Support timely and effective responses to student concerns and grievances.
- Work collaboratively with the Dean of Professional Studies and Community Education to hire full-time faculty in accordance with College policy and procedures.
- Supervise and collaborate with the academic and program coordinators to develop sufficient adjunct faculty pools, and hire, assign and evaluate adjunct faculty.
- Work collaboratively with the Dean and Associate Dean of the Professional Studies and Community Education Division to ensure full-time and adjunct faculty are evaluated using the prescribed processes, procedures, and timelines; make recommendations for continued improvement, promotion, or tenure of faculty.
- Ensure full and adjunct faculty are engaged in department, division, and College activities; encourage faculty participation in College governance, committees, task forces, and initiatives.
- Supervise academic and program coordinators to ensure that academic quality and rigor are consistent across the department; student learning outcomes are being met; and College policies, processes, and procedures are managed effectively.
- Develop and implement professional development that meets the needs of departmental faculty.
- Ensure full and adjunct faculty are completing required College training within prescribed timelines and report outcomes to the Associate Dean.
- Assume accountability for the assignment of faculty to classes, monitoring schedules and faculty and staff workload for accuracy throughout the semester for all courses offered in the Department.
- Work with the Dean and Associate Dean of the Professional Studies and Community Education Division on the development of data-informed and student-centered master schedules to ensure clear pathways for student completion, meet the needs of students, and maximize space.
- Represent the department within the division, area, and college's governance structures, the profession, and the internal/external communities, as needed.
- Attend Academic Council and College-wide Forum meetings on a regular basis.
- Communicate with leaders in the private and public sectors and in educational agencies to determine needs for new courses and programs; manage program advisory committees.
- Facilitate academic partnerships between and among division faculty, faculty in feeder high schools, and four-year transfer institutions; ensure maximum course articulation for students.
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all public information about programs and courses within the division and work with staff to produce accurate schedules, catalog information, program information, and multi-year instructional plans.
- Oversee the work of grants managed by the department, seek grants to support the creative work of faculty and the focus on teaching, learning, and student success through collaborative work with other College offices.
- Develop and oversee the departmental budget and assist in the development of the divisional budgets to meet the needs of the department's programs of study; adhere to budget deadlines set by the area and the Finance Office.
- Initiate internal operating procedures that support the work of the Professional Studies and Community Education Division, in collaboration with the coordinators, associate dean and dean.
- Maintain appropriate faculty, employee, and student files.
- Ensure Education Programs are compliant with all federal, state, and local regulations as applicable.
- Oversee coordination of all credentials, certificates, and degree programs offered in the Education Department.
- Serve as member of Chairs Council and related groups.
- Serve on discipline-specific external committees, or appoint designee, as appropriate.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Department Chairs shall serve 12 months and be eligible for all benefits provided to other 12-month employees, including but not limited to annual leave, personal days as defined in the College Code; Spring and Winter Breaks and all holidays recognized by the College. Department Chairs must adhere to and abide by all institutional policies and procedures as articulated in the College Code.
- Department Chairs shall serve a maximum of two consecutive four-year terms and retain faculty status and tenure (if tenured; however, tenure is not required for this position). Chairs may teach no more than one course each semester (Fall and Spring).
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
- As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
