Job Description
New River Community College (NRCC) is a comprehensive community college located in the New River Valley of Virginia. At NRCC you can prepare for the future with any of our various occupational programs or college transfer courses. NRCC faculty members are well known not just for their academic background, but also for their capacity to work closely and effectively with students. All faculty who teach college transfer courses have doctorates or master’s degrees, while those in occupational programs have a diverse background which combines academics with practical on-the-job experience. NRCC is seeking a student focused, connection building, and compassionate problem solver to join our team as the FastForward/G3 Career Coach. The FastForward/G3 Career Coach will assist students interested or enrolled in noncredit workforce training with career and educational planning services, program admissions, financial aid, successful program and credential completion, identifying work-based learning opportunities, and job placement and retention. The FastForward/G3 Career Coach will assist students in overcoming barriers to their success by connecting them to supportive services in the region. The career coach will work closely with students before, during, and after their training and credentialing programs to provide support throughout the program and into the workforce.
The FastForward/G3 Career Coach will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success. The work of the FastForward/G3 Career Coach is proactive and designed to assist students in the completion of a credential or degree. This includes communicating regularly with students, maintaining records of student outreach and other interactions, making connections to available college and community support services, and assisting with academic interventions when necessary. The FastForward/G3 Career Coach will utilize a variety of technological solutions in addition to in-person interactions to connect with students. The ability to utilize and learn new technology and the willingness to work in different environments is essential. The successful candidate must be caring, organized, communicative, and flexible.
Reporting to the Student Success Coordinator, the FastForward/G3 Career Coach’s primary role will be to provide career coaching support for FastForward/G3 program students to ensure completion of program and credential attainment, in addition to job placement and retention assistance to students completing workforce training and credentialing.
Note: This is a three-year grant funded position which will end on June 30, 2026.
Responsibilities:
Assist potential students from the point of inquiry to credential completion
Assist with college application process
Connect students to financial aid resources through the FAFSA and/or FANTIC application and to scholarship opportunities through the college’s foundation
Discuss career and educational goals and available pathways with students, including traditional academic degree programs, transfer programs and short-term workforce credential opportunities, including G3 and FastForward programs
Assist students with developing and documenting academic and career plans
Ensure students successfully complete the enrollment process, including course registration
Support students through their academic and/or workforce-credentialing journey
Orient students to resources available through the college (food pantry, transportation, etc.)
Provide proactive academic advising and career coaching
Guide students to tutoring and other academic supports as needed
Assist students with barriers that may affect success/retention
Respond to early alerts in case management systems and provide interventions as appropriate, in consultation with faculty members
Provide follow up to ensure students meet benchmarks on pathway to completing credentials or degrees
Utilize technology and other resources to connect with students
Utilize case management systems to manage communication campaigns with students, including outreach to potential students as needed
Document interactions with students through case management systems
Manage and respond to early alert interventions
Assist students in learning to utilize important registration and advising technology
Contribute to the success of the student services team
Accurately account for all inquiries and admissions activity
Ensure that all necessary documents and forms are completed accurately and in a timely manner
Keep all required reports current and accurate
Work collaboratively with college faculty and staff in support of student success
Attend all required department meetings and training sessions
Work occasional evening and weekend hours
Perform other duties as assigned
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others reach their educational goals utilizing evidence-based solutions
Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support to, and motivate students
Excellent listening, helping, and customer service skills, including the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
Have an understanding of the needs of individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including the ability to communicate and work with racially, ethnically, economically, and age-diverse individuals and groups
Demonstrated knowledge of career exploration programs and experience providing personalized advice on career and postsecondary options
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage tasks while working in a demanding, fast-paced environment with changing priorities, and adhering to required deadlines meeting work priorities and objectives
Proficiency in use of technology, such as Office 365, student information systems, and Google Workspace
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Desire to learn and grow by participating in professional development opportunities
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with student records
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in a related field
Work experience in a higher education setting, academic/career coaching, or academic advising
Demonstrated knowledge of PeopleSoft, customer management systems, career service platforms, or similar relevant educational technologies
Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information
