Media Technology Shift Supervisor
James Madison University’s Libraries is seeking two team-oriented individuals for the position of Media Specialist in the makerspaces (https://guides.lib.jmu.edu/themakery/) of Innovation Services. Our makerspaces offer tools, supplies, and guidance for the JMU community to learn, tinker, craft, invent and discover. We provide access to virtual reality, 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, textiles and more.
Successful candidates will assume a lead role providing guidance and instruction to patrons and other employees. Must be comfortable working independently as well as in a team environment. Will provide excellent customer service assisting patrons through phone and in person with questions related to their maker projects and class assignments. Must be willing to learn and advance trouble-shooting skills in a variety of applications and equipment related to audio/video production work, 3D printing, virtual reality, textiles and electronics. Working knowledge of the aforementioned equipment and technologies is preferred. Position coverage could include days, evenings and weekends depending on scheduling.
Responsibilities include providing technical advice and assistance on services and equipment to faculty, staff and students to support their multimedia and makerspace projects. Emerge as a leader for all desk assistants during your shift by providing guidance and instruction. Check in/out equipment including making referrals or recommendations for equipment based on patron needs. Properly opening and closing The Makery spaces during your shifts, which includes making sure that all primary and secondary spaces are secure and that all related equipment is in working order.
Other duties include effectively applying policies, managing problems and ensuring proper equipment use by patrons and employees alike. Maintains and integrates a variety of Makerspace equipment and systems including 3D printing, Virtual Reality, CNC Router, Laser Cutter and other emerging technologies. Attend training and other professional development opportunities proactively learning new software and hardware skills during down times. Assisting Innovation Services with other duties and projects as assigned.
Competitive candidates will demonstrate excellent customer service and leadership skills, intermediate computer skills and an ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Knowledge of/and aptitude for learning advanced trouble-shooting skills in a variety of cutting edge technologies including 3D Printing/modeling, Virtual Reality, iMovie, Adobe CC suite, textiles, electronics, and various types of media and audio production equipment is preferred. Applicants must be dependable, willing to work evenings; pay strict attention to detail, effectively interpret and apply policies and work as both a member of a team and independently. The candidates must be able to use sound judgment in managing problems and emergencies that could arise.
The successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to be flexible depending on the university and libraries calendars. Hours may not be available when the university is closed or on breaks.
