The School Board of Craig County Public Schools invites applications for the
position of Superintendent.
THE COUNTY
Craig County is located in the Southwest region of the Commonwealth of Virginia, north of the City of Roanoke and the Roanoke Urbanized Area. The population estimate is 5,030 in the 330 square miles comprising the County.

QUALIFICATIONS
The board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of
Craig County Public Schools:
. Experience as a teacher and principal is required.
. Experience as a central office administrator is preferred.
. Experience as a superintendent or associate/assistant superintendent is
preferred.
. An earned doctorate is preferred.
Leadership and Management Sk/ls - The successful candidate is a team player,
comfortable with shared decision making, a decisive leadel and a visionary, creative
thinker.
Personal Characteristics - The successful candidate is a good listener, caring, and
consistent.
Board-Superintendent Relations - The successful candidate effectively mediates and
accommodates different perspectives, is willing to assume a lead role in decision
making while keeping the School Board informed, and provides options and
recommendations to the board before accepting board directives.
Staff Relations - The successful candidate creates an atmosphere of trust and
mutual respect, maintains open channels of communication to and from staff, and
supports professional growth through staff development activities.
Community Relations - The successful! candidate effectively advocates for school
issues and needs, communicates effectively on both private and public levels, and
responds to individual concerns in an appropriate manner.
School Finance - The successful candidate lobbies for school funding on behalf of
the school division, develops and explains the rationale for the budget to the board
and local officials, and offers creative funding solutions.
Areas of Expertise - The successful candidate has expertise in curriculum and
instruction, budget and finance, human resources, grant management, policy
development and school reform (e.9. strategic planning, total quality management,
etc.).
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must meet the Iegal requirements to be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a superintendent in Virginia. Questions concerning the eligibility requirement should be directed to the Office of Teacher Education and Licensure, Virginia Department of Education at (804) 371-2522.
Within six (6) months of taking office and throughout his/her employment tenure with the Craig County School Board, the Superintendent must establish his/her legal residence within sixty (60) driving miles of the School Board Office in Craig County.
SALARY: Beginning salary: $87,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications
