Under general direction is responsible for professional supervisory and administrative law enforcement duties of considerable difficulty as a Division Commander; may be assigned to administrative or staff functions; performs related work as assigned.

Typical Duties

• Provides administrative leadership, supervision, training and direction of sworn Peace Officers assigned to a patrol Division, Criminal Investigation unit and support staff
• Assigns, trains, supervises and evaluates personnel
• Supervises support and volunteer organizations including Search and Rescue and community volunteer patrol
• Administers special programs to include community policing, DARE and GREAT
• Communicates departmental directives to commissioned ranks through subordinate supervisory personnel
• Responds to, manages and closely supervises the investigation of all major crimes and incidents of a sensitive nature
• Available for response to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week and handles calls for service as necessary
• Assesses and evaluates divisional operations and makes recommendation for improvement
• Prepares reports
• Assists in the preparation of annual budget and monitors expenditures
• Responds to and manages citizen complaints regarding law enforcement services and programs
• Supervises and reviews all disciplinary action, internal investigations and other administrative inquiries
• Facilitates multi-jurisdictional cooperation with numerous governmental agencies
• Researches, prepares and administers multiple Federal, State and local grants
• Assumes administrative command responsibilities in the absence of or as directed by the Captain, Chief Deputy or Sheriff
• Writes divisional policies and procedures
Essential functions of this position include but limited to: driving; standing, walking, sitting; crouching; stooping; kneeling; reaching; bending; lifting; carrying; pushing/pulling; working alone; working with and around others; dealing with interruptions; repetitive motion (hand, wrist, elbow & shoulder) for writing, typing, driving, using telephone, weapons qualifications, etc.; vision acuity (near & far) to be able to clearly analyze a scene and respond accordingly; color vision for driving, writing, weapons qualifications; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for communicating with staff and citizens; touch (finger dexterity) for driving, responding in darkness, handling duty weapons, and other types of equipment. Environmental conditions include working with mechanical equipment and hazards that are inherent to the job of responding to emergencies and dealing with individuals with weapons, drug/alcohol and domestic violence situations etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Five years commissioned law enforcement experience, including one year supervisory; OR, any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of background check and polygraph examination. Must be certified by AZPOST. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job contingent upon satisfactory 5-yr Motor Vehicle Report.
Preferred Qualifications: AZPOST certification and Supervisory Experience.
This position is exempt from overtime.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of:
-Law enforcement principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment
-Principles and practices of management including leadership, training and supervision
-Federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations
-Budgeting and fiscal management
Working knowledge of:
-The social sciences as they relate to public safety and law enforcement
- County geography
Skill in:
-Obtaining information via interviews and interrogations
-Care and use of firearms, motor vehicles and technical equipment
Ability to:
- Administer a specialized law enforcement function
-Apply law enforcement principles, practices, methods and techniques
-Analyze difficult law enforcement situations and use good judgment in decision making
-Prepare and maintain records and reports
-React quickly and calmly in emergency situations
-Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
-Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
-Follow written and verbal instructions
-Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
